Polonnaruwa, or "City of Kings" is the ancient city of Sri Lanka which dates back to over 1000 years ago. I was inspired to paint this part of the ruins of what must have been a magnificent city. I was particularly drawn to this "meeting place" of the city’s rulers, due to the intricate stone carvings of the animals featured throughout the buildings facade, and by adding a couple of Indian Blue Peacocks, (which are native to Sri Lanka) I feel they adorn the steps beautifully, giving a feeling of grandeur and elegance, much befitting this once important palatial city.
