On continuation of my 'period' paintings, this piece has a sad tale that inspired me to create it.
It features a young girl and her mother, the girl is probably around 16 years old, she is therefore now eligible for marriage, her mother needing the money to help raise the rest of her family, decides to sell her daughter to a gentleman who is much older than her daughter, and less than desirable to the girl!
The mother receives the purse of money from the gentleman, as the tearful girl is passed over to her pending husband.
